League: Milton Keynes 8 – 9 Cambridge Eagles

The final SEMLA East Division Two league match ended with a whimper as Milton Keynes let a two goal lead slip in the fourth quarter to lose by one against the Cambridge Uni 2nd team, the ‘Eagles’. Leading 6-4 with 20 minutes to go, it was like MK’s season had ended with another win. Cambridge stepped up, MK switched off and the students dominated the final period, scoring 5 goals.

Although missing some key regulars; goalie Pat Land, defender Charlie Allen, and midfielders Toby Jeffries and Matt Sawyer, MK had good squad numbers and expected to have the legs over Cambridge in the final phase of the game who came with the minimum 10-man squad. The opposite happened. Cambridge finished much the stronger and well played to them.

MK’s Bobbie Ingham Clark finished top scorer in the game with 4 goals, closely followed by Jack Gambrill and Cambridge’s #29 with 3 goals each. MK’s other scorer today was Ben Amos.

Man of the match for MK was vice-captain Corey Jamieson due to his 100% effort marshalling the midfield and he was visibility the most disappointed at the end after all his hard work. On a brighter note, Corey was MK’s overall man of the season. In only his second season playing lacrosse Corey finished 3rd top scorer this season and has been our most improved player this season (closely followed by one or two candidates). Jack finished top scorer for the season, followed by Toby.

The other award went to referee and MK coach, Rob Gooch. He had to pause the game mid-way through the 3rd quarter to double check the scorecard. He’d marked down a Cambridge goal in the wrong section of his scorecard, hence some confusion. It was not quite a “put your hand up if you’ve scored a goal” situation but the MK bench certainly enjoyed it.

Subject the final league tables being updated, losses also by Reading 2’s and Guildford yesterday could place MK 4th overall in East Division Two. We’ll certainly take that given the tricky parts of this season where we couldn’t win a one horse race.

Our next field lacrosse action is in 3 weeks with the SEMLA 6’s tournament on Saturday 21st April in Reading, followed the day after by the I Love Herts 8’s tournament in Hatfield. Before those we have another short trip up to Lutterworth to play indoor box lacrosse on Sunday 15th April.
